With its array of lighthouses and rugged sea cliffs, the sleepy Isle of Portland is exactly what I needed to ease into an extended trip. It offers fresh seafood, cider galore, spectacular views...Oh, and did I mention that it has some of the best sport climbs in the UK? Imagine ascending walls which give you a panoramic view of the glistening ocean, or the adrenalin of deep water solo at high tide. The ratings of the routes are quite generous, and there is something for everyone.
After battling my crab at The Pulpit Inn, we finished the night with cards and wine at the Portland Bunkhouse: a converted military station which now acts as a hostel with a large kitchen and only one female washroom. Cheers to humble beginnings!
